Living in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan can be considered one of the affordable countries to live and study. As the oil and tech industries are so huge in Azerbaijan, poverty is relatively rare. The currency of Azerbaijan is the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). Most students live and study in Baku, so these numbers indicates some average living costs in Baku.

Monthly payment in state dormitories starts from 150 manats. 250 azn in private ones. The price of apartments for rent starts from 300 Azn. It varies according to the proximity to the city and maintenance conditions. In general, foreign students studying in Azerbaijan can stay in hostels, dormitories or private apartments as they wish, according to their wishes and budget.

The healthcare system in Azerbaijan is well developed. Everyone can benefit from health services, regardless of who they are in the country. However, students from other countries can apply for medical services based on their medical insurance. For this reason you need to provide proof of insurance during the visa/permit application process.

After being admitted to any of the Azerbaijani universities, the student must apply for a study visa to the Azerbaijani embassy. Some countries do not require a visa to come to Azerbaijan: Belarus, Georgia, Russian Federation, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, İran etc.

Every foreign citizen coming to Azerbaijan has a temporary 15-day residence permit. Within 15 days, it should be registered at the place where it is, and the permit period should be changed to 90 days. Within 90 days, a 1-year student permit must be applied to the State Migration Service of Azerbaijan. According to the legislation of the Republic of Azerbaijan, foreign citizens who overstay their permit are fined from 300 azn. There is no state fee for the registration at the place of residence. But there is a fee of 40 azn for a 1-year student residence permit.

 Note: To get a 1-year student residence permit, the validity period of the passport must be 1 year from the date of starting the study.

Foreign students studying in Azerbaijan are given a part-time work permit.

Foreign students coming to Azerbaijan can open bank accounts and get bank cards in their own name after receiving a student residence permit( Kapital Bank, Azerbaijan İnternational Bank, Ziraat Bank, YapıKredi etc).
